Het monument voor de gevallenen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd in 1936 door de beeldhouwer Giovanni Nicolini gecreëerd op het toen nieuw gevormde Piazza Municipio (Stadhuisplein) van Messina. Het monument toont drie bronzen sculpturen op een hoog podium: vooraan, met onbedekt hoofd, een infanterist, met een vliegenier en een matroos aan zijn zijde

The monument to the fallen of the First World War was created by the sculptor Giovanni Nicolini in 1936 on the then newly formed Piazza Municipio (City Hall Square) of Messina. The monument depicts three bronze sculptures on a high podium: in front, with his head uncovered, an infantryman, with an airman and a sailor at his sides

De klokkentoren werd voor het eerst gebouwd tijdens het Normandische tijdperk. Nadat het in 1783 gedeeltelijk beschadigd was door een aardbeving, besloot de Senaat van Messina het in te korten en met een koepel te bedekken. In 1863 werd deze klokkentoren echter afgebroken omdat deze onveilig was. Het huidige uiterlijk dateert uit de reconstructie die werd uitgevoerd nadat het opnieuw werd verwoest, dit keer door de aardbeving van 1908. In 1933 werden de astronomische klok en alle mechanismen die elke dag om 12.00 uur in werking treden, aan de huidige klokkentoren toegevoegd. Dit werd gedaan door de firma Ungerer uit Straatsburg.

The bell tower was first built during the Norman era. After being partially damaged by an earthquake in 1783, the Senate of Messina decided to shorten it and cover it with a dome. In 1863, however, this bell tower was pulled down because it was unsafe. Its current appearance dates back to the reconstruction carried out after it was destroyed yet again, this time by the 1908 earthquake. In 1933, the astronomical clock and all the mechanisms that go into action every day at noon were added to the current bell tower. This was done by the Ungerer company of Strasbourg.

Fontana di Orione (Orion's fontein) is een monument gelegen aan de Piazza Duomo in Messina. Het is een van de twee decoratieve fonteinen gemaakt door de beeldhouwer Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, in opdracht van de Senaat van Messina. Het stuk is geïnspireerd op de mythe van Orion die volgens een van de vele bestaande versies de stad Messina zou hebben gesticht. Kunsthistoricus Bernard Berenson noemde de Fontana di Orione “de mooiste 16e-eeuwse fontein van Europa”.

Fontana di Orione (Orion’s Fountain) is a monument located in Piazza Duomo in Messina. It is one of two decorative fountains made by the sculptor Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, commissioned by the Senate of Messina. The piece was inspired by the myth of Orion who, according to one of the many existing versions, is said to have founded the city of Messina. Art historian, Bernard Berenson, called the Fontana di Orione “the most beautiful 16th-century fountain in Europe”.

De kathedraal van Messina is het belangrijkste monument in de stadKathedraal Santa Maria Assunte (Maria Hemelvaart) aan de Straat. Hoewel de kathedraal werd herbouwd na verwoest te zijn door aardbevingen en oorlogen, is ze nog steeds redelijk trouw aan haar oorspronkelijke uiterlijk. Het pijporgel is na dat van de Dom van Milaan het grootste van Italië. De kathedraal van Messina herbergt de kostbare Tesoro del Duomo (kathedraalschat). Een van de belangrijkste stukken is de ‘Golden Manta’, gemaakt van fijn gegraveerd goud en versierd met juwelen en edelstenen.

Het werd officieel ingewijd door aartsbisschop Berardo in 1197 in aanwezigheid van Hendrik VII van Zwaben. Door de eeuwen heen heeft het gebouw verschillende veranderingen ondergaan, waardoor verschillende stilistische en architecturale elementen op elkaar zijn geplaatst. Aardbevingen in 1693 en 1783 beschadigden de kathedraal van Messina ernstig en de daaropvolgende aardbeving in 1908 verwoestte deze bijna volledig. De kerk werd herbouwd naar een ontwerp van architect Francesco Valenti, maar liep in 1943 verdere schade op tijdens het bombardement in de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Messina Cathedral is the most important landmark in the city on the Strait. Although the Cathedral was rebuilt after being destroyed by earthquakes and wars, it is still fairly faithful to its original appearance. Its pipe organ is the second largest in Italy after that of Milan Cathedral. Messina Cathedral houses the precious Tesoro del Duomo (Cathedral Treasure). One of the most important pieces is the ‘Golden Manta’, made of finely engraved gold and decorated with jewels and precious stones.

It was officially consecrated by Archbishop Berardo in 1197 in the presence of Henry VII of Swabia. Over the centuries, the building has undergone several changes, resulting in the superimposition of different stylistic and architectural elements. Earthquakes in 1693 and 1783 severely damaged Messina Cathedral and the subsequent one in 1908 almost completely destroyed it. The church was rebuilt following a design by architect Francesco Valenti but suffered further damage in 1943, during the bombing of World War II.

Sinds 2019 heeft de Rampa della Colomba een nieuw uiterlijk gekregen en zichzelf opnieuw ontwikkeld met kleurrijke mythologische beelden die naar het Heiligdom van Montaldo leiden. Er zijn 9 Sireniden (zeemonsters) als iconografie genomen van de fontein aan het begin van de trap, die een explosie van kleuren geven.

The so-called Rampa della Colomba connects one of the famous sanctuaries of the city of Messina with the historic center. The driveway is decorated with contemporary sculptures and is one of the most picturesque spots in the entire city

Since 2019, the Rampa della Colomba has taken on a new look and redeveloped itself with colorful mythological statues leading to the Sanctuary of Montaldo. 9 Sirenids (sea monsters) have been taken as iconography from the fountain at the beginning of the stairs, giving an explosion of colors.
