DODENHERDENKING HOLLAND-AMERIKA LIJN MONUMENT – 4 MEI 2026

Afgelopen maandag 4 mei 2026 werden er in Nederland over de hele dag herdenkingen gehouden. Op deze dag staan we stil bij de gevallenen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Al worden tegenwoordig ook gevallenen in andere conflicten herdacht. In Rotterdam worden bij het monument De Boeg de gevallenen in de Koopvaardij herdacht. Ook in Rotterdam zijn er herdenkingen bij het Holland-Amerika Lijn monument in de middag en ’s avonds bij het Lloyd monument bij de Veerhaven.

Het Holland-Amerika Lijn monument, ook wel NASM monument genoemd staat vlakbij het ss Rotterdam aan de kop van het 3e Katendrechtse Hoofd. NASM is de vroegere naam van de Holland-Amerika Lijn. Er waren zo’n 70 mensen om 13.00 aanwezig om de plechtigheid bij te wonen. 

 

Voorzitter van vereniging De Lijn, Wouter Heijveld ging in zijn toespraak nader in hoe het in de Tweede Wereldoorlog geweest moest zijn. Schepen van de Holland-Amerika Lijn waren als een van eersten het slachtoffer van de Duitse agressie. Het gevaar om op een mijn te lopen was groot en gebeurde dus ook. 

Na de toespraak en het taptoe signaal volgde de kranslegging. 

Als eerste was Nico Bleichrodt aan de beurt. Dat is de Vice President International Sales & Marketing bij Holland America Line. Bijgestaan door leden van het Korps Zeekadetten Rotterdam.

Daarna Ton Wesselink van het ss Rotterdam, geassisteerd door een van zijn medewerkers.

Mirjanne Hultzer-Hooft legde de krans namens vereniging De Lijn. Als nabestaande van Frits Hooft, Chef-Hofmeester op het ss Westernland van de Holland-Amerika Lijn. Hij stierf in New York in 1942 aan een ziekte.

De familie Willeboordse en de wijkraad Katendrecht/Wilhelminapier waren de volgende. 

Wilhelmina Ronteltap, nabestaande van Marius Albertus Ronteltap die in 1941 omkwam als opvarende van de Pennland lag ook een bos bloemen.

Na de kranslegging volgde het defilé. Met als eerste de kransleggers. Daarna eindigde de herdenking.

Na afloop was er gelegenheid tot napraten in de Captain’s lounge aan boord van het ss Rotterdam. Napraten, maar ondertussen wel nadenkend over de vrede en de huidige toestand in de wereld. De kransen en bloemstukken bleven achter bij het monument als stille getuigen van de herdenking.

REMEMBRANCE OF THE DEAD AT THE HOLLAND-AMERICA LINE MONUMENT – MAY 4, 2026
 
Last Monday, May 4, 2026, commemorations were held throughout the day in the Netherlands. On this day, we remember those who fell in the Second World War. Nowadays, fallen soldiers in other conflicts are also commemorated. In Rotterdam, at the monument The Bow (De Boeg), those who fell in the Merchant Navy are remembered. Also in Rotterdam, there are commemorations at the Holland-America Line monument in the afternoon and in the evening at the Lloyd monument by the Veerhaven.
 
The Holland-America Line monument, also called the NASM monument, is located near the ss Rotterdam at the head of the 3rd Katendrechtse Hoofd. NASM is the former name of the Holland-America Line. About 70 people were present at 1:00 PM to attend the ceremony.
 
Chairman of the association De Lijn, Wouter Heijveld, elaborated in his speech on what it must have been like during the Second World War. Officers of the Holland-America Line were among the first to fall victim to German aggression. The danger of stepping on a mine was great and did indeed occur. 
 
After the speech and the taptoe signal, the wreath-laying followed. Nico Bleichrodt was the first to lay a wreath. He is the Vice President International Sales & Marketing at Holland America Line, assisted by members of the Corps Sea Cadets Rotterdam. Then Ton Wesselink of the ss Rotterdam, assisted by one of his employees.
Mirjanne Hultzer-Hooft laid the wreath on behalf of the association De Lijn, as a relative of Frits Hooft, Chief Steward on the ss Westernland of the Holland-America Line. He died in New York in 1942 from an illness. The Willeboordse family and the Katendrecht/Wilhelminapier district council were next. 
Wilhelmina Ronteltap, survivor of Marius Albertus Ronteltap who died in 1941 as a crew member of the Pennland, also laid a bouquet of flowers. After the laying of the wreath, the parade followed, starting with the wreath layers.
 
Then the commemoration ended. Afterwards, there was an opportunity to chat in the Captain’s lounge on board the ss Rotterdam. Chatting, but at the same time reflecting on peace and the current state of the world. The wreaths and flower arrangements remained at the monument as silent witnesses to the commemoration.
